“Predator”

TANZANIA Through Harold’s Lens:

In the dark of night.

From five miles away.

Maasai villagers hear the loud roar of the male lions.

Weighing over 500 pounds, a man-eater is possibly stalking the Maasai village.

While lions do not usually hunt people, man-eating behavior in rural areas of the Serengeti increased greatly from 1990 to 2004.

Lions attacked 815 people killing and eating 563.

  1. Thank you. It was an adventure that I don’t think I would want to experience again. At least it was not during mating season when the lion’s privacy boundaries are larger and more protected by them.

    • Thank you 12THSONOFLAMA. I was in an open-sided Land Rover. No doors, no sides, no glass. Our guide spotted a pride of lions and slowly drove up to them. He told me do not move, do not standup and do not talk. Just look. Fortunately I had my camera ready. He got within about five feet of the pride and I was focused on this guy, when he let loose with a loud roar. Camera clicked like crazy.

      • That’s an awesome shot and a tremendous experience. I don’t know if I’d be calm enough to click the shutter. I watched a 20/20 special this weekend on two people that film/photograph lions and other animals throughout Africa. It was a tremendous piece. Nice shot again

  2. I thank you for ‘Liking’ another one of my images in my new series “The Maasai”. I love exploring the more personal side of this rich and warm tribal culture. I truly appreciate your companionship as you travel with me on this African journey through my lens.
